In diesem peppig aufgemachten Sammelband versammeln sich 24 Geschichten und Gedichte aus "modernen Klassikern", aber auch unbekannteren Werken der deutschen Kinderliteratur (Ausnahme: der Israeli David Grossman und Agatha Ngonyani aus Tansania, die aber in Hannover wohnt.). Unterteilt in 3 Kapitel gibt es Geschichten für die Altersstufen ab 3, 5 und 7 Jahren. Sicher ist die Auswahl subjektiv und mancher Leser wird alte und neue "Klassiker" wie Astrid Lindgren u.v.m. vermissen, aber die Texte machen oft neugierig auf die Gesamtausgabe wie z.B. Preusslers Kleine Hexe" oder "Koks, der Drache" von Jörg Hilbert. Die Illustrationen sind teilweise aus den Originalausgaben, teilweise für diese Sammlung neu entstanden und laden zum Betrachten ein. Besonders gelungen sind die praktischen Vorlesetipps von Christine Kranz von der Stiftung Lesen, die auch die Geschichten ausgewählt hat. (Gross-)Eltern, Erzieherinnen und alle, die ehrenamtlich als Vorlesepaten agieren, finden hier gerade für den Start in ihre Vorlesetätigkeit wertvolle Hinweise und 3 Anleitungen für Vorleseaktionen zu Texten aus diesem Buch.
